Information Technology Policies
The Office of the University CIO leads a series of comprehensive and consensus-driven programs for the development of policies in information technology for academic, administrative, and infrastructure services. Areas of responsibility include University policies and Central Administration policies that support Harvard’s legal, contractual and institutional obligations.
University Information Technology Policies
The Office of the CIO facilitates the development of University policies relating to the use and management of information technology. These University policies can be categorized into a few broad groups:
- Policies that assist University compliance with legal requirements, e.g. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). See www.security.harvard.edu, www.dmca.harvard.edu.
- Policies that assist implementation of contractual requirements, e.g. Payment Card Industry (PCI) standard. See http://www.security.harvard.edu/ccs/index.php.
- Policies that address Harvard-specific concerns, e.g. appropriate use of technology resources, privacy, access to information. See http://harvie.harvard.edu/policiesandcontracts/staff/persmanual/ sec2/sec2privacy.shtml (Harvard-only access).
- Other policies nominally related to information technology may be found at http://www.provost.harvard.edu/policies.php
Central Administration Information Technology Policies
The Office of the CIO is directly responsible for the ways in which information technology is used, managed, and secured in Harvard’s Central Administration. Central Administration systems provide the functional infrastructure for the University’s most critical services: financial management and operations, administration and human resources, technology services and communication, facilities management and parking, University planning and real estate management, as well as police, health, and human services.
Information about the IT policies that guide Central Administration can be found at

Central Administration Security Policies and Practices
Information about the Security policies and practices that guide Central Administration can be found at University_CIO_-_Central_Admin_Security_Policies_and_Practices_7.09.08.pdf.
